Housing Opportunities

The housing plan is to create a register to identify people who are unhoused, under-housed, or paying too much for housing. It encourages reviving boarding and rooming houses, which offer shared living spaces and communal services as an affordable solution. The plan prioritizes using existing housing instead of building large apartment complexes, keeping rental income local and preserving neighborhood character. It urges state and federal housing funds to upgrade current properties and supports setting up temporary camping centers for the homeless. This strategy aims to expand housing options while minimizing disruption to communities.

Food Security

We must ensure that every citizen has access to healthy food. By expanding programs like "My Neighbor’s Garden" and holding large grocery companies accountable for delivering excess food to designated locations, we can significantly reduce food waste and hunger. Supermarkets can offset their losses by donating unwanted goods, and shifting delivery responsibilities from volunteers to large corporations will be a game changer. Living in the Willamette Valley, “The Bread Basket to the World,” it’s unacceptable that 20% of our population goes hungry. Through volunteer gardening programs in local yards, we can produce fresh food for our community, making a real impact on our food pantries and supporting our neighbors in need. An important goal for many of us is to have no need for anyone to hold up a sign stating that they are hungry, my children too, or please give me some food, anything please.

Safety

The safety and policing plan is to recruit police officers from within the Portland city limits to strengthen community ties. It advocates for allowing police and emergency workers to "double dip," enabling them to continue working past retirement while maintaining their benefits, which improves retention and reduces costs. The plan also highlights the importance of community connection events, where citizens and officers can interact in non-stressful settings to build trust and understanding. Additionally, it supports peaceful protests and proposes designating spaces, like the Tom McCall Waterfront Park, for peaceful rallies without disrupting local businesses or neighborhoods.

Economy

Portland’s economy thrives on the unique character of its various neighborhoods and the talent within them. To strengthen this, we must address the gap between small business needs and the skills of underemployed citizens. Supporting skill development through tax abatements or bonds can help people move from low-wage jobs to middle-class earnings, benefiting both individuals and the community. Small businesses play a key role in creating great jobs, and by uniting local services with opportunities to sell globally, we can bring new revenue into the area, boosting the local economy while preserving its uniqueness.

Electric Vehicles & Green Energy

The plan for electric vehicles and green energy focuses on completing the city's numerous unfinished charging stations to meet the growing need for electric vehicle infrastructure. It suggests using properties with existing 220-volt electrical service to install charging stations easily. Additionally, the proposal calls for electric companies to issue bonds that support green energy, using the funds to install 220-volt plug-ins and new meters. The plan also aims to allow users to charge electricity costs to accounts other than the property where the outlet is located, simplifying the process and encouraging more widespread adoption of electric vehicles.

Town Halls and Evening Meetings

The purpose of City Meetings is to make them more accessible by holding City Council meetings in community venues and at night, allowing more citizens to attend. It also includes the town hall meetings tailored to different age groups, providing an opportunity for real dialogue, unlike current council meetings where citizen input often receives little response. The goal is to create back-and-forth conversations that foster understanding, allowing diverse perspectives to be heard, which can lead to better decision-making and outcomes for the community.

Youth Coming of Age and Rights

Expand School Clubs on School Grounds After Hours
Youth coming of age and rights passage must be celebrated citywide. We'll be working to provide young people with activities that allow them to shine, such as dancing, singing, poetry, game nights, movies, and talent contests. By organizing multiple events across the city, the community can come together to support and engage with its youth. The idea is that keeping children busy with positive activities helps prevent negative behaviors, ensuring they grow up in a nurturing and supportive environment We plan to expand after-school clubs on school grounds to increase participation and provide better oversight under one roof, enhancing accountability and engagement. It also highlights the need for greater support for children in the foster care system, emphasizing that these children belong to the community and require stability, security, and nurturing environments. The proposal calls for a review of Oregon’s foster care system to ensure that necessary changes are made to help these children thrive, reinforcing the idea that it takes a village to raise a child and build a strong, supportive community.
